BPHS CHAPTER 1

Sloka 1

अथैकदा मुनिश्रेष्ठं त्रिकालज्ञं पराशरम्।
पप्रच्छोपैत्य मैत्रेयः प्रणिपत्य कृताञ्जलिः॥१॥

One day, the student Maitreya went to the great wise teacher, Parashara, who knew everything about the past, present, and future. Maitreya folded his hands, bowed down with deep respect, and asked him a question.

himanshu@aheadterra.com commentary:

This opening teaches us the right way to study astrology.

  • Parashara is called trikālajña, one who knows the past, present, and future.
  • Jyotisha is the science of time, karma, and results, so the teacher must understand time deeply.
  • Maitreya approaches with humility, folded hands, and reverence before asking questions.
  • This shows astrology is sacred knowledge, not an ordinary subject.
  • The chapter introduces the guru-disciple tradition through Maitreya and Parashara.
  • Divine knowledge should be sought with humility and devotion.

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra Chapter 1 Sloka 2

Śloka 2

भगवन् परमं पुण्यं गुह्यं वेदाङ्गमुत्तमम्।
त्रिस्कन्धं ज्यौतिषं तस्य होरास्कन्धः प्रकीर्तितः॥ २॥

Simple Meaning:

Maitreya said: "O holy teacher! Astrology (Jyotisha) is supremely sacred, highly secretive, and the most excellent limb of the ancient Vedas. It is divided into three main branches, and among them, the branch called 'Hora' (predictive astrology for individuals) is the most glorious and renowned."

Notes and Commentary:

himanshu@aheadterra.com commentary:

R. Santhanam explains that this verse serves to define exactly what Vedic Astrology is and how its vast knowledge is structured.

  • The Eye of the Vedas (Vedanga): The Vedas are the ancient scriptures of India, and they have six auxiliary disciplines (limbs) required to understand them. Jyotisha (Astrology) is considered the "Eye" of the Vedas because it gives humanity the vision to see the invisible forces of time and destiny.
  • Highly Secretive (Guhyam): Maitreya calls it a secret science. This implies that the true predictive power of astrology is not meant for the arrogant or the greedy; it reveals its secrets only to the pure-hearted and devoted.
  • The Three Branches (Triskandha): Santhanam breaks down the three massive pillars of astrology:
  • Siddhanta (or Ganita): The intense mathematics and astronomy used to calculate the exact movements and longitudes of the planets in the sky.
  • Samhita: Mundane astrology. This covers global events, predicting the weather, earthquakes, the rise and fall of political empires, and agricultural yields.
  • Hora: Predictive astrology for individual human beings. This is the science of reading a specific birth chart to predict a person's lifespan, wealth, health, and destiny.

By stating this, Maitreya is politely focusing his request. He acknowledges the vastness of astrology but specifically asks Sage Parashara to teach him the ultimate secrets of Hora - how to decode individual human destiny.
